Sonos goes public

Sonos became a public company yesterday and listed as SONO on Nasdaq. The bell that rang yesterday was a purpose-built bell, created by Sonos Sound Experience Leader Giles Martin and Oscar-winning sound engineer Chris Jenkins. Also in the future will Nasdaq the new bell use.

The following has reached Sonos in the last year

  • In June, Sonos launched the most versatile and compact smart speaker for music and television: the Sonos Beam. The intelligent loudspeaker already supports voice control via Amazon Alexa and will soon be integrating additional voice assistants, including Google Assistant, which will be released later this year.
  • AirPlay 2 has also been available on Sonos since July, providing users who use AirPlay 2 on Sonos with Siri a new, additional voice experience. For example, ask Siri to play any song, album, or playlist on an iOS-enabled device on Apple Music to start playing on Sonos.
  • Sonos recently announced a new partnership with IKEA – a collaboration to democratize sound and design in the home.
  • In October 2017, Sonos launched its first voice-operated loudspeaker, the Sonos One. Similar to the Sonos Beam, the Sonos One is able to support multiple voice services and play music, podcasts, audiobooks, and other sound content from more than 100 streaming services.

Support for Google Assistant will come later this year

Parallel to the IPO, Sonos CEO Patrick Spence Axios or The Verge Given interviews. Amazon’s Alexa and Apple’s Siri are already supported by Sonos. Last year, the company also announced plans to support the Google Assistant. This has now been confirmed once again.

Spence indicated that the Google Assistant will be supported later this year and that they are working hard to get it delivered on time for the holiday season.

Currently, Sonos focuses on the US, Canada and various European countries. However, the manufacturer wants to gain a foothold in Asia. To achieve this, you will probably work with a major Chinese partner to bring a Chinese language assistant on the equipment.

Also interesting is the statement that 93 percent of all previously sold Sonos products are still actively used. Spence also commented on Apple. Sonos and Apple are traveling with a completely different agenda. The HomePod is a great product, but you need a suitable device and an Apple Music subscription.
