Based on artificial intelligence, autonomous weapons pose a threat to humanity

On the one hand, simplifications in everyday life, improvement of road safety, energy savings or better medical diagnosis, and on the other – work on autonomous weapons, which lead to the creation of machines to kill people. It works on such systems Russia and Israel.

According to experts, artificial intelligence can be as useful as it is dangerous. What will be in the future depends on the users and who will work on its development. However, its development seems unavoidable.

Designed LAW systems (Lethal Autonomous Weapons) are designed to carry out attacks on military targets (people and installations) without an operator in the air, on land, underwater, as well as in space. This means that such a machine can identify and eliminate the target itself, without human intervention. At least a few countries in the world are developing such weapons. According to press reports, the Russians are working on an autonomous “Status 6” nuclear torpedo, while Israel is developing deadly robots of flies size.

So far, the use of this type of weapon without human supervision is considered illegal – the final command must be issued by a man. There are, however, exceptions in the form of autonomous defense systems.

We want to use artificial intelligence to do better medical diagnostics, to better detect diseases, to learn new things. Such a powerful computational machine can show us other ways of thinking that are not available to us, but we do not want it to kill people. There is now a time to segment this field for what we want to do and what we do not want to do – says in an interview with the information agency Newseria Innowacje Aleksandra Przegalińska from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

In a group of over one hundred scientists sent to the United Nations, a request was made to prevent further scientific work on the development of autonomous weapons, ie war robots operating on the basis of artificial intelligence. Among the signatories of this letter was Elon Musk.

This is another attempt to draw attention to the risks associated with the improper development of this technology, arousing a discussion about the direction in which artificial intelligence is heading. The owner of Tesla and SpaceX recognized artificial intelligence as the biggest threat to humanity. A similar opinion was shared by the astrophysicist Stephen Hawking and Bill Gates, creator of Microsoft.

If this project, as a society, we give to a very small group of scientists and experts, it will be a project that can not be supervised and it can certainly be potentially dangerous. Every technology is potentially dangerous – claims Aleksandra Przegalińska.

A completely different opinion on artificial intelligence is given by Mustafa Suleyman – co-founder of the company DeepMind, taken over by Google, which works on the creation of a digital brain. According to him, the new technology will help in the future solve the biggest problems of humanity, such as access to drinking water, financial risks on the stock market or social inequalities.

Artificial intelligence is a young field of technology. The term was used for the first time in 1955. Since then, it has become one of those areas where the greatest emphasis is placed on development. Supercomputers are already able to win in chess games with top-class competitors, and thanks to deep machine learning it is possible to create creations such as Jane AI, a computer personal trainer motivating the user to undertake physical activity.

Artificial intelligence has already appeared in so many positive applications so far. It is almost everywhere, in many financial operations, in recommendation systems, on the Internet, in social networks. Although it happens that it can be used for improper purposes, if it is a project dispersed in society, there is less chance that it will be abused or used negatively. – the researcher from MIT calms down.

According to analysts Markets and Markets, the value of the artificial intelligence market in 2017 amounted to USD 16 billion. By 2025, the rate of average annual growth is expected to reach over 36 per cent to reach the value of 190 billion dollars.
