Poor smartphone sales were just one of many Essential problems in 2017.
Well, Essential Phone Andy Rubin, the creator of Android, did not conquer the smartphone market. There was never a chance that the device would become as popular as Apple or Samsung phones, but there is no hiding – the results of its sale are simply tragic.
According to the report of Francisco Jeronimo – director of research at IDC – Essential, he sold only 88,000 pieces of his smartphone in 2017. Certainly this is a great disappointment for the company, although nobody expected Essential Phone to reach tens of millions of customers, just like Apple, Samsung and other large manufacturers.
For comparison, during the fourth quarter of 2017, Apple sold 77.3 million iPhones, and Samsung – 74.1 million phones.
It seemed that Essential Phone would be an ideal smartphone. Who could create a better smartphone with Android than one of the creators of this system? It seems that Andy Rubin has buried the chance of success of the device by mere promises without coverage and constant application of the date of its premiere. After all, deliveries of Essential Phone small start already in June, and finally launched only on August 25.Interestingly, soon after the premiere of the smartphone, its buyers became the target of cybercriminals attack, who in some way obtained access to the official Essential domain and sent e-mails to its clients. In these messages, cybercriminals wrote that in order to verify the order, it is necessary to provide an additional e-mail address and telephone number. They even asked for scans of identity documents.
The Essential list of problems in 2017 also included Andy Rubin’s unexpected vacation, relating to reports of inappropriate relationships with a woman who worked for him on Google.
It is difficult to say what the future of Essential will be, but I do not know if it would be a good idea to try to create another smartphone. Maybe it will be best if the company takes care of something else.
